Pennsylvania Health Secretary Eli Avila Resigns
By Tony Romeo
HARRISBURG, Pa. (CBS) -- Governor Tom Corbett announced on Thursday the departure of his controversial health secretary.
Eli Avila made headlines during his tenure as Pennsylvania's health secretary, but for the wrong reasons. Just a few months after assuming his post, Avila became the subject of news stories about a reported conflict with the owner of a Harrisburg eatery over an egg sandwich. The owner of the restaurant claims Avila invoked his position as health secretary when he complained that the sandwich wasn't fresh.
Avila made more news when, a few months later, he ordered windbreakers for staffers at state expense, after having spent his own money to have a badge made for himself.
In a news release, the governor's office says Avila is leaving to pursue other interests, noting that his family was never able to relocate to Pennsylvania with him.
Michael Wolf, currently Avila's executive deputy, will serve as acting secretary.
