PECO Offers Small Rebate For Electric Car Owners
By Paul Kurtz
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - PECO has taken the next step in its drive to encourage motorists to go electric.
Mark Meuhl of Bryn Mawr learned he was the first official recipient of PECO's Smart Driver Rebate after buying a Fisker Karma electric car. It was only $50 for a car that cost $120,000. But PECO CEO Craig Adams says their program is not really about the money.
"It'll help let us know where they're charging their car and help us monitor our system so we can collect that information and use it as we do future capacity planning for the electric system for Peco."
The electric company is also offering to kick in thousands toward the cost of installing a handful of public charging stations throughout the area. PECO is hoping to learn more about the future of electric vehicles through a soon to be released study conducted by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission.
Executive Director Barry Seymour says work places, train stations, and shopping malls are all logical locations for charging stations.
"If you look and think about Center City Philadelphia, the King of Prussia area, Conshohocken, the I-95 corridor north and south of the city, there are some obvious locations starting to emerge for potential charging stations."
But Seymour says we're still years away from seeing that.
