Owners Of Philadelphia's 2 Biggest Newspapers Plan Dozens Of Layoffs

By Dan Wing

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The owners of The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News have announced plans to lay off nearly 50 members of the news staff.

Philadelphia Media Network -- which owns both papers and Philly.com -- made the announcement Monday in a message to Newspaper Guild members that the 46 layoffs will be effective as of December 4th.

The move is part of a plan to consolidate the newsroom, which the company says could save them $5-million to $6-million annually.

A spokesman for the Newspaper Guild says they are reviewing the cuts to see if any grievances should be filed.

The Guild calls the move "an astonishing display of misdirected management."
