Organ Day At The Kimmel Center

By RJ McKay

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Jay Wahl, the artistic director for programming at the Kimmel Center, shared a brief preview of a free event, Organ Day, on June 13th at Verizon Hall.

"We start Organ Day at 11 a.m. with a family program, where we are going to tell kids stories, we're going to let kids actually touch the organ and make sounds on it. Then we get into a full five hours of a diverse line-up. We have a really cool thing, which is that we are going to do some transcriptions of more well-known music. Tim Evers, who is an organist with us, is going to be playing a series of music from 'The Lord of the Rings.'"

Wahl also talked about the organ itself.

"The Fred J. Cooper organ is the largest mechanical action pipe organ in a concert hall in the United States. It has just under 7,000 pipes; it's substantial and it puts out a lot of sound."
