TRENTON, N.J. (CBS) -- Today, August 27th, is the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Irene making landfall on New Jersey (see related story and video).
Mary Goepfert, of the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management, says recovery is still ongoing in some parts of the state.
"We've recovered in some areas fairly well," she said today. "In other areas of the state, particularly central and northern New Jersey, there are still some families that are struggling with the long-term recovery process."
Irene caused nearly $1 billion in damages and forced a massive evacuation.
"New Jersey experienced the largest evacuation in the state's history during Hurricane Irene," Goepfert notes.
And she says volunteer organizations did yeoman's work after Irene's visit, logging more than 42,ooo voluteer hours to help others.
