Olney Shooting Leaves 4-Year-Old Boy Hospitalized: Philadelphia Police

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia police say a 4-year-old boy was rushed to the hospital after being shot in the hip in the city's Olney section. The shooting happened shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday inside a house on the 5500 block of North 4th Street.

Police say a man in his 20s who's related to the victim was inside the home playing with a group of children when he received a gun and accidentally fired it.

The victim was struck once and taken to Einstein Medical Center in stable condition, police say.

Philadelphia Police Capt. Nicholas DeBlasis says authorities believe the shooting is accidental.

The suspect, along with a second man, fled the scene in a vehicle, police say.

Police are searching for both for questioning.

DeBlasis says the parents of the boy were home at the time and there was more than one child present.

The relationship between the alleged gunman and the victim is unknown at this time.

Neighbors are praying for a speedy recovery.

"I'm a parent and it's heart-wrenching. It's sad, it's sad," neighbor Rosalyn Neal said. "God bless the family. I don't know if the child made it or not, but I'm praying for the family."

No arrests have been made.

An investigation is ongoing.
