NJ Man Sentenced For Fatally Beating Girlfriend's Crying Child
PATERSON, N.J. (AP) — A New Jersey man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for beating his girlfriend's 18-month-old son to death because he was crying.
Victor Sainz was sentenced Friday after admitting to striking the child over the course of several days in September 2014 and pleading guilty to aggravated manslaughter.
The Record reports that Passaic County chief assistant prosecutor Christopher Freid said at the sentencing that Sainz beat the child because he was frustrated when he was crying.
Defense attorney Frank Sciro says his client was very remorseful. He quoted a psychological report that said Sainz suffered from mental conditions and says he was unable to cope with the stressful responsibility of taking care of the child.
Judge Miguel de la Carrera imposed the maximum sentence possible under his plea deal.
