NJ Doc Investigated After Abortion Procedure Goes Awry

The New Jersey attorney general's office is investigating a Camden County doctor whose chain of abortion clinics is in trouble.

KYW's Pat Loeb reports that on August 20th authorities from New Jersey and Maryland raided the Voorhees, NJ headquarters of American Women's Services, a chain of 15 abortion clinics in four states operated by Dr. Steven Brigham, shortly after he took one of his patients to Maryland to perform a late-term procedure.

Attorney general's office spokesman Paul Loriquet says it did not go well:

"The patient suffered a perforated small intestine and uterus, and she had to be immediately taken to Johns Hopkins for life-saving surgery."

The investigation that followed uncovered a host of problems at his clinics.  Loriquet says he expects the Board of Medical Examiners to take action soon on Brigham's license to practice in New Jersey.
