New Path On Schuylkill River Trail Opens, Connecting Philadelphia To Phoenixville

PORT PROVIDENCE, Pa., (CBS) -- The Schuylkill River Trail now officially extends all the way to Phoenixville as the Canal Towpath opens in Upper Providence Township, Montgomery County.
The 1.8-mile stretch of trail runs along the canal in a section of Upper Providence known as Port Providence.
"This is not just a gem in this part of our county, this is a gem that links our county together with Philadelphia, it opens up our trails that today sees over a million people a year," said Montgomery County commissioner Josh Shapiro.

John Pearson owns a restaurant along the canal called Fitzwater Station, he says while the hardcore bike riders will prefer the road.
"The person looking for a little exercise and that person who just wants to enjoy a little bit of being outdoors, he's going to definitely use the trail, and the trail is gorgeous."
