Minister Of Liberian Consulate On Ebola: 'We Are Dealing With A Race Against Time As Far As The Spread'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Dom Giordano talked with Gabriel Williams, the Minister of the Liberian Consulate, on Talk Radio 1210 WPHT about confronting the Ebola crisis.
Williams said dealing with Ebola outbreaks has taken a serious toll on Liberia, but the country appreciates the support of the international community.
"The Ebola situation, obviously, is a matter of grave concern relative to the threat to human existence, not just in Liberia, but the world as a whole, as we have seen. We are dealing with a race against time as far as the spread of the virus. We are still trying to play catch up and, as you know, Liberia's health infrastructure got overwhelmed. The entire country was overwhelmed. International efforts have been coming in. We cannot understate the need for more and more effort to be able to combat this disease. Nevertheless, we are very grateful to the United States and other international partners for the enhanced involvement to combat the pandemic."
He reiterated that a travel ban from Western Africa would not be helpful in halting the spread of Ebola.
"All of the health experts, medical scientists and the World Health Organization have indicated that isolation of countries would not be the way forward, it would accelerate the spread of this disease. Border closures may not be the right approach in dealing with this pandemic, the best way forward is the ramping up of sustained international effort in combating the disease."
