Local Curator Offers Tips For Early Spring Gardening
By Robin Culverwell
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The official start of spring comes next week - but one look around your neighborhood and chances are someone is already working in the garden. But there are some DOs and DON'Ts for this early spring.
It's hard to resist the call of the garden when the sun is out and temperatures are soaring to the 70s in mid March. Already cherry trees, daffodils, primroses and crocus are heralding the arrival of Spring.
Longwood Garden's curator Tomacz Anisko (pron: TOE-mash An-EESH-ko) offers some early spring tips before putting trowel into the dirt:
"If the plants are acting as if it were mid April, we can do the same thing," says Anisko. "So we can do our gardening chores: preparing the beds, dividing perennials, pruning shrubs and trees."
Anisko says it's still too early for summer bedding plants and vegetables, but he adds with each passing week, the likelihood of a damaging frost decreases, so gardeners can relax & enjoy the flowers.
