Jim Kelly Says Michael Vick Should "Slide, Throw The Ball Away, Run Out Of Bounds"

By Spike Eskin

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Jim Kelly played 11 NFL seasons, went to four Super Bowls, and five Pro Bowls. Even with all that experience, his advice for Michael Vick is almost exactly the same as any Eagles fan who has been screaming at his television, worried that their starting quarterback will be injured.

"[Vick should] slide, throw the ball away, run out out of bounds," Kelly told 94WIP's Angelo Cataldi and The WIP Morning Show Tuesday morning. Vick played sparingly due to injury this preseason, though both injuries that kept him sidelined occurred while he was in the pocket.

Vick has never been willing or able to slide regularly during his NFL career, though he did promise to do it this season, after it was suggested by Barack Obama. His lone slide during preseason action this year was head first.

"The good thing for me is I was too slow to run out of bounds. I tried to slide, I wasn't a very good slider either," Kelly said. "I mean, maybe that's why I didn't play baseball. I might have held on to the football a little bit too long and took some hits I probably shouldn't have done. But when you're a great athlete like he is, you want to make something happen. You want to make the difference between a third and three, and now you're going to be moving the chains for a first and ten, so when you're a great athlete sometimes you will take that extra chance. But the further you go on, and he's not a very big guy, he's going to take those hits and it's going to take its toll after a while."
