Hurricane Florence's Effects On Jersey Shore, Delaware Beaches

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (CBS) - The fury of Hurricane Florence is being felt at the Jersey Shore.

Experienced surfers got the size but not the shape they like as localized wind and long distance wave energy created sloshy storm surge and rip currents.

Lifeguards tried to keep bathers out of the water, but Ocean City senior guard Shanin Theiss says the few rescues they had to perform were critical.

"We saw a significance in the building of surf through the week and the currents got a lot stronger. The wind picked up so we had that longshore current going from north to south, rip currents obviously got worse," said Theiss.

Delaware beaches are also feeling Florence's impact, although it's not a direct hit. There are also dangerous conditions for beachgoers. The surf will be rough and there's a high risk for rip currents.
