Horticultural Society Plants 20,000 Bulbs To Celebrate Philly Flower Show
by Mike Dougherty
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Next year's Philadelphia Flower Show theme centers around Holland, the nation that supplies 60% of the world's flowering bulbs.
The Philadelphia Horticultural Society, with the help of some students, is planting 20,000 bulbs in Center City to raise excitement for the show.
All the digging now will pay off in a few months.
"Tulips, daffodils, alliums. It's going to be spectacular in the spring," said Sally McCabe with the Philadelphia Horticultural Society
She says now's the perfect time to plant bulbs, and she has some tips for those who want to try at home.
"The rule of thumb for bulbs is point side up, three times deep as they are tall, because you want to have them deep enough in the ground so that the squirrels aren't finding them," said McCabe
While these plants won't push through the soil in time for the Flower show, they will be impossible to miss next May.
