High School Students Work The Polls On Election Day

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- High school students from seven area schools fanned out to polling places across Philadelphia on Tuesday.

It's all a part of a new program to engage the city's newest voters.

Masterman Seniors Da'Quan Strickland, Matthew Erhlich and Sam Pfeiffer are too young to vote.

"We're all actually 17 here."

But the group traveled to a dozen polls in the 15th ward.

"We've basically been going around to the different polling areas asking the people three questions."

Questions about absentee ballots, early voting, and single party voting during the primaries. The goal of the effort is to get these voters engaged before they ever cast a ballot.

"It's been pretty fun, we got to know more about the entire process."

Walker Mosely coordinates the Committee of Seventy's Election Ambassador Corps. The new program is designed to boost May's 12 percent turnout among millennials, an effort they're hoping it'll grow.

"We're trying to definitely expand it with the presidential primaries and then in the fall the presidential election."

By then Jason Zhu says he'll be old enough to cast his ballot and he plans to.

"We younger people like us have to make decision for our future."
