SAN FRANCISCO (CBS) -- What to do with all those digital photos on your phone, tablet, camera, and computer? Google has a solution for you, and it doesn't cost a dime.
Whether you use Android, Apple, or PC, Google is letting you go hog wild on its servers.
"You can now back up and store unlimited high-quality photos and videos for free," says Anil Sabharwal, the lead product manager of Google Photos.
With Google Photos, you don't have to tag people, places, or things.
"Let's have a look at all the photos I've taken of my niece."
He swipes through shots of her as an adolescent.
"But what's amazing is I can go all the way back to the week she was born. We can automatically group photos of the same person over time."
The app -- at least in this demo at Google's annual developers' conference -- picks out photos of the teenager as an infant.
Type in a description -- "snowstorm in Philadelphia," for example -- and all such pictures from your collection appear.
Other Google advances include offline maps -- including place of interest search and turn-by-turn directions.
"You won't need to suck down expensive data or have super-reliable connectivity every time you want to navigate somewhere," says Jen Fitzpatrick, a Google VP.
