Flyers Look Listless In Gagne's Return

PHILADELPHIA (CBS)—The Jumbotron showed a one-minute montage of his 10 years in Philadelphia. There were the incredible game-winning goals. The elation of last year's Stanley Cup run. The memories still fresh in the minds of many who filled the Wells Fargo Center. He received the stick taps from his former teammates in orange and black, and a standing ovation from appreciative Flyers' fans. They welcomed back former Flyer Simon Gagne Thursday night—wearing the away white of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Gagne acknowledged the reaction with a wave to the adoring crowd, many wearing Gagne's old Flyers' No. 12 jerseys. And though it might have been a little unusual watching a Flyers' staple for a decade skate around in different colors, Gagne's warm homecoming didn't last very long. The Lightning's Steven Stamkos reminded everyone the pleasantries were over, when he scored the game's first goal late in the first period.

The Atlantic-Division leading Flyers were listless, took some senseless penalties and played catch-up all night, losing 3-2 to Tampa Bay and dropping their first game at home this season.

The Flyers fell to 2-1-1 and Tampa Bay remains unbeaten at 3-0 to begin the season.

Flyers' goals came from Nikolay Zherdev, his first this season that came late in the first period, and Danny Briere, who scored his third goal this season midway into the third, which drew the Flyers to within 3-2.

Seven penalties didn't help, especially when a team is playing from behind the whole night, as the Flyers were. Third-period penalties on James van Riemsdyk, whistled for hooking, and Matt Carle's delay of game, called when he flicked the puck out of play with around five minutes remaining in the game, undercut the Flyers' comeback chances.

Tampa Bay outshot the Flyers, 26-24, and when the final horn sounded, a resounding chorus of boos fell on the home team.
