Police: 5-year-old boy shot in Philadelphia's Olney section
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A 5-year-old boy was shot in Philadelphia's Olney neighborhood on Monday morning, police said. The shooting happened on the 200 block of West Fisher Avenue, around 9:20 a.m.
According to police, the child was on the porch of a home when they were shot once in the left pelvis.
The child was rushed to the hospital and placed in stable condition.
Police say this was not a random shooting. Authorities believe it was an accident.
The 5-year-old boy was shot while in his home surrounded by family when somehow a mishandled handgun accidentally went off, sending one bullet into the pelvis of the boy.
"People should secure their guns in a responsible, effective manner, especially when you have kids in the house," Captain James Kearney, of the Philadelphia Police Department, said.
Most neighbors were unaware of the incident
"We didn't hear anything," a neighbor said.
Police executed a search warrant and recovered a shotgun from the home, but did not find the handgun in question.
Kearney says everyone inside the home is cooperating with the investigation, except for the child's father, who police say is currently under "house arrest" for a previous incident.
Police say he could be charged with unlawful possession of a weapon.
"Our job is to investigate and hold people accountable and we're doing that," Kearney said.
It's still unclear who was handling the gun when it fired.
Although this shooting has been deemed an accident, police are working with the District Attorney's office to determine whether charges are appropriate.
Police haven't made any arrests.
