KYW Medical Report Sponsored By Independence Blue Cross

By Dr. Brian McDonough, Medical Editor

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It is called fatty liver disease, and the words describe it perfectly.

In fatty liver, a person gets exactly that: excess fat built up in the liver. We see the problem in people who drink too much alcohol.

This excess fat can cause inflammation in the liver. This can eventually lead to damage of the liver. But fatty liver is also found in people who are overweight.

As our country battles obesity, it's becoming more commonplace. One of the best things you can do is lose weight and the best way to do this is through a healthy balanced diet.

There is no doubt that regular exercise is also quite important as well.

One of the best things you can do is eat a healthy, low-calorie and low fat diet. It's also very important that you see your doctor regularly. It's critical to follow-up.
