Dwarf Larkspur Adds A Little Color
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - You know how you hear about something for the first time and then suddenly it comes up again right away? Last week, I saw picture of an adorable native plant I'd never heard of before called Delphinium tricorne. I'd always thought of delphiniums as those tall towering European plants with giant spikes of flowers - as many of them are.
But then the next day on a garden tour, there it was, about 15 inches high, with a head of perky purple flowers.
Commonly known as 'Dwarf Larkspur,' Delphinium tricorne is naturally found in open woodlands around here, so it's easy to grow. The flowers can vary from light lavender to white as well as the deep purple - but in any color, it's an easy way to brighten up a shady spot with a pretty native plant.
While these perennials do come back each spring, 'Dwarf Larkspur' also reseed, so they'll continue to pop up here and there around your garden to surprise you with a smile for years to come.
