Downingtown Middle Schooler Inspires Bone Marrow Registry Event This Saturday

By Jim Melwert

BERWYN, Pa. (CBS) -- There's a bone marrow registry drive on Saturday at the Upper Main Line Y, in Berwyn.

Thirteen-year-old Cameron (in photo) is an accomplished swimmer at the Upper Main Line Y, and a distance runner at Downingtown Middle School.  But after he was recently diagnosed with leukemia, doctors recommended a bone marrow transplant.

"It's been a little bit tough for him not being able to get into school and participate with his sports and activities," says his father, Doug.

Racing to Register stepped in, and will host a bone marrow registration drive at the Upper Main Line YMCA in Berwyn on Saturday, from 8am to 1pm, to encourage people to sign up for the registry.

"Takes about 15 minutes," Doug says.  "Most of it is actually paperwork."

And a quick swab of the inside of the cheek.

As for Cameron, his dad says the mindset that makes him a good swimmer and runner is also helping him fight leukemia:

"He's incredibly positive and strong-willed.  He's looking forward to finding a match that will hopefully put this blood cancer behind him."
