Deshazor Everett On Darren Sproles Hit: 'Definitely Wasn't Intentional'

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The hit heard 'round Philadelphia.

With 11:38 remaining in Sunday's Eagles-Redskins game, Washington safety controversially Deshazor Everett blew up Darren Sproles on a punt-return opportunity ending Sproles' day due to a head injury.

Sproles did not call for a fair catch, but many believed the hit -- which came before Sproles caught the ball -- to be dirty.

Everett offered his apologies to Sproles after the game.

"I didn't see him fair catch the ball at all, but I did, I thought the ball was right there in front of me when I went for the tackle, but unfortunately it wasn't and the ball hit me back," Everett said via Redskins.com.

"My condolences to him. It definitely wasn't intentional for me to just try to take a guy out of the game or anything like that. I was just out there trying to play football."

Eagles left tackle and captain Jason Peters called it a "cheap shot."

Former Eagles linebackers and current 94WIP analysts Ike Reese and Seth Joyner agreed on Twitter that Sproles should have called for a fair catch.

"I don't think it was malicious," Eagles analyst Ray Didinger said on Monday's 94WIP Morning Show. "I don't think it was purposeful. I think that Everett was doing what gunners do, is that he's running full speed and he;s trying to time up -- like in his mind, he's feeling how long the ball is in there and he's trying to guess at what time the ball is going to be coming down."
