Community Comes To Aid of Montco Cop and Family Displaced by Arson Fire

By Brad Segall

LIMERICK, Pa. (CBS) -- Thanks to the generosity of the community, this holiday season will be just a little brighter for a police detective and his family in Montgomery County, Pa. who lost their Lower Pottsgrove home earlier this month in an arson fire.

Police departments throughout the Philadelphia region stepped up and pitched in to help Limerick detective Ernie Morris and his family get through a tough time in the weeks leading up to the holiday season. The public also held fundraisers to raise money to help the family get back on their feet.

Limerick police chief Bill Albany says the family will spend the holidays in a rented home with rented furniture.

"The family heirloom decorations and whatnot -- the baby's first Christmas -- those things are absent from the tree, so there's going to be a void there that I don't know can possibly be filled," Albany tells KYW Newsradio.

At a time when there appears to be a lot of police bashing, Albany notes, it's nice to see members of the community show their support for the men and women in blue.

Morris' next-door neighbor is charged with setting the fire and remains behind bars in lieu of $1 million bail.
