City Council Plans Hearing On Cell Phone Health Risks
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Is that cell phone pressed against your ear a cell phone a health risk? A Philadelphia City Council committee plans a hearing to look at that growing debate.
It is not uncommon to see councilmembers with cell phones pressed to their ears, but they may want to think twice when a committee hearing is held on the dangers of cell phone use.
The session was prompted by concerns of the Washington-based research group 'Environmental Health Trust.'
Spokesman Rob Stuart cites studies linking cell phones to an increased risk of brain cancer and other cancers.
"What I think the City Council hearings will do is expose the fact that cell phones are small microwave ovens. We should take precautions to let people know that that's the case," Stuart said.
Councilwoman Blondell Reynolds-Brown is the sponsor of the hearing. She says she wants the hearing to focus on the risks of cell phones to kids. Stuart insist those risks persist even if the users have Bluetooth earpieces.
The date for the hearing has not been scheduled yet.
