Cherry Blossom Festival Kicks Off In Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Subuaru Cherry Blossom Festival kicks off today.
"It's a big celebration of Japanese culture," says Aaron Dilliplane the Assistant Director for the Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia, "we have something for everybody."
Dilliplane says the festival celebrates the relationship between Japan and Philadelphia and highlights the more 2600 Cherry trees which will spring to life along the Schuylkill river in coming weeks.
"It's a four week long series of events, including anything from film screenings and food tastings, there's a sushi contest, there's demonstrations, live performances," Dilliplane says.
The festival begins this week at the Liberty place rotunda at noon.
Attendees can see Japanese flower arrangements on Monday, origami on Tuesday, kimoni dressing on Wednesday and calligraphy on Thursday.
Activities then spread out across the city and the flowers are expected to bloom on time.
Dilliplane says, "we'll definitely have Cherry Blossoms for Sakura Sunday."
