Celebration Planned For Phila. Organization That Preserves Pan African Culture
By Cherri Gregg
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A Philadelphia organization that tells stories to preserve Pan African culture and tradition is celebrating next week.
GriotWorks produces artistic works featuring professional griots, or storytellers that present folk tales from African and Caribbean cultures in the community.
"You can as a story teller interject what's happening right now into these traditional folks tales and give people the sense of we did this before we an do it again."
Filmmaker Jos Duncan founded the group eight years ago and says they provide an outlet for African Americans to share their feelings on issues like the #BlackLivesMatter movement, shootings in Ferguson, and more.
"We have no place or no way to process or what we felt or what it triggered in us."
Duncan is passing the torch for GriotWorks and celebrating the tradition next week.
