Man arrested after crashing car into Newark, Delaware, pub while driving drunk, police say

An alleged drunk driver was arrested after crashing his car into a pub in Newark, Delaware, earlier this month, police said.

Johnny Guzman, 35, of New Castle, Delaware, was arrested by state police Aug. 20 and charged with several felonies, police said.

On Aug. 15, police responded to Two Stones Pub at 1203 Christiana Rd. around 1:30 a.m. for a report that a vehicle had crashed into the building, police said.

When officers arrived, they found an unoccupied Mitsubishi Lancer that had crashed into the front of the building. The business was closed at the time of the crash, and no one was inside, police said.

Officers found documents belonging to Guzman inside the vehicle. A short time later, troopers found Guzman walking along Christiana Road away from the crash.

Police said Guzman showed numerous signs of impairment and refused to perform sobriety tests. He was taken to a local hospital because of his impairment while troopers obtained and executed a search warrant for his blood, police said.

The investigation revealed Guzman was a patron at the pub earlier that night. Staff asked him to leave multiple times, but he remained on the property for several hours.

Guzman eventually got into his Mitsubishi. As he drove away, he accelerated and intentionally turned toward the pub's front doors, crashing into the building, police said.

On Aug. 20, troopers obtained a warrant for Guzman's arrest, and he turned himself in.

Guzman was charged with DUI, leaving the scene of a property collision, malicious mischief by a motor vehicle and other related charges. He was released on a $2,650 unsecured bond.

Two Stones Pub reopened Monday at 11:30 a.m., following work by contractors, electricians and painters.

One of the pub's owners, Michael Stiglitz, said the damage inside was repaired in one weekend. Stiglitz said the storefront, which was mostly glass and aluminum, is expected to be reinstalled in October.

For now, the business has a temporary door and a temporary exterior wall covered with siding.
