Cabrini Women's Hoops Pumped About Game At Madison Square Garden
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - On Monday night, January 3rd, the women's basketball team of Division III Cabrini College will take on Albright.
At first glance, this appears to be your average midseason college hoops match-up. However, when you consider that the game will take place at Madison Square Garden, safe to say it will be anything but an average experience for the two teams.
Playing a game at the Garden has actually become an annual occurrence the last few years for Cabrini. So how does a women's program at a suburban Philadelphia Division III school get an opportunity like this? Cabrini head coach Kate Pearson explains.
"We have a very generous donor who has connections with St. John's who has been able to give us this opportunity."
Listen to Matt Leon's interview with Kate Pearson:
As you can imagine, a lot of teams are always very interested in being a part of this game with Cabrini, but Pearson says circumstance dictates who they play more than anything:
"We actually have had a couple of New York schools contact us about, "How do you get in there? Can we get on that schedule and do those things?' But we get a phone call that says, 'This is the date that is available', that they have worked out for us to do it. And each year it's just kind of whoever that opponent is at that time is the game that goes on. And usually when we call that school, they jump on the opportunity."
The game with Albright will actually tip-off at 9:30pm on Monday night as it's the second half of a doubleheader. The first game will feature the St. John's men taking on Georgetown in a nationally televised Big East showdown.
Pearson laughs when asked if she appreciates the Red Storm warming things up for her team:
"Yeah, that's what they keep joking, we're the headline game, the 9:30 tipoff."
