Police Discover Burned Body In Fairmount Park

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Philadelphia police made a gruesome discovery in Fairmount Park Sunday evening.

At about 7 p.m., police responded to the 3600 block of Greenland Drive after a passerby called in about a burnt body.

Police say when officers arrived at the scene, they found a body lying on its back about 50 feet down the embankment.

By the time crime scene investigators were called to the scene, it was so dark they had to rely on their flashlights to guide them through the wooded area.

Police say at that point, they found nothing on or near the body including any weapons or flammable materials to indicate what went wrong.

The body was so badly burned that police could not identify the race or gender of the victim.

"Everything is burned. There's nothing left," said Lt. Joseph Galie with the Philadelphia Police Department.

Police say homicide detectives will be on this case while the exact cause of death is determined by the medical examiner.

An autopsy is scheduled to be performed some time Monday.
