Beachgoers walking through sizzling hot sand to beat heat along Jersey Shore
OCEAN CITY, N.J. (CBS) -- Scorching temperatures are taking over the Philadelphia region, and what better way to beat the heat than heading to the Jersey Shore? Beaches were packed in Ocean City as beachgoers soaked up the sun Thursday.
But for beachgoers, with temperatures in the high 90s, they had to walk over some sizzling sand to find the perfect spot.
CBS3's Matt Petrillo brought along what he calls his "Thermo gun," an infrared thermometer gun, and clocked sand temperatures from 80 to over 100 degrees.
A little hot sand didn't stop many people from beating the heat along the ocean. There were plenty of people cooling off in the ocean.
One boy filled up his bucket and doused himself with seawater.
Others are seeking refuge from the sun in the shade under the beach umbrellas where it is much cooler. In the shade, the Thermo gun registered the temperature at a cool 67 degrees.
The ocean water clocked in between 67 and 69 degrees.
"With the hot sun beating down on you for hours and getting in the cool water, especially with the wind, the cool beach wind it's really nice to help cool down," Lilia McHugh said.
Eyewitness News cameras also caught plenty of people eating ice cream. Families say down the shore is the best place to make memories.
