WILMINGTON, D.E., (CBS) -- Authorities with the Delaware Department of Transportation are warning homeowners about a paving scam taking place in neighborhoods near Wilmington.
According to a spokesman with the department, bogus workers are seeking out homeowners with no intention of actually paving a road, sidewalk or driveway.
"I feel like I want to trust people and this gentleman came to the house. I trusted him," Wilmington resident Kimberly Inman told Eyewitness News.
Inman is out $210 after a man who claimed to be with a paving company came to her door and offered to pave her driveway with extra materials he allegedly had from another project in the area.
Inman said the man took the money and left.
"He was very elaborate," Inman said.
Officials with DelDOT are urging homeowners to always double check to make sure the person works for a legitimate company. According to the department, it is rare that contractor would have extra materials from a previous job.
