Man killed by Aldan, Pennsylvania, police officer was wielding a knife, mayor says

An Aldan, Pennsylvania, police officer shot and killed a man armed with a knife Thursday morning, the borough's mayor said in a statement.

The shooting occurred around 3:30 a.m. when police responded to a 911 call in a residential area on South Clifton Avenue near Aldan Avenue, Mayor Michael Ceci said.

"According to preliminary information, the officer encountered an adult male armed with a knife. During the encounter, the officer deployed a Taser and subsequently discharged their service weapon, striking the individual," Ceci said.

The man was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead. The officer was also taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

There's no word on the nature of the initial emergency call or if anyone will face charges. The man's identity has not been publicly released.

Neighbors in the area said they heard gunshots and shouting on Thursday morning.

"I heard someone shout. And then after hearing them shout, I heard, I want to say 2 to 3 shots," a resident who did not want to be identified said.

Nicole, who lives in the neighborhood, said she didn't know the man who was shot and killed well. She said she would only see him in passing.

Nicole and other neighbors said the shooting is very out of place for an area that rarely sees more than an accident.

"There had to be 40 police cars lining our street," Nicole said. "The caution tape and everything. It's so quiet. It's so quiet and uneventful here. This is just so sad."

The officer who fired the shots is being moved to administrative duty while the Delaware County District Attorney's Office investigates the incident.

A spokesperson for the DA's office said they did not have more details to release.
