AG Kathleen Kane Charged With Second Perjury Count
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa., (CBS) -- Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane is facing a new perjury charge.
She was in court for an arraignment in Collegeville on Thursday.
Kane is facing new charges including perjury, a felony in the third degree.
After her arraignment this evening, she gave a brief statement, alluding that her second arrest is retaliation for her investigation of porn emails allegedly sent among law enforcement officials.
"And I will promise this to the people of Pennsylvania. You can arrest me two times, you can arrest me 10 times, I'm sure this isn't the end of the game. But I will not stop until the truth comes out and I will not stop until the system operates the way it's supposed to be," said Attorney General Kane.
"This case is very straight forward. This is a perjury case that we have brought based upon materials that she testified about," said Montgomery County First Assistant District Attorney Kevin Steele.
Kane was already facing charges filed in August that include obstruction, conspiracy and perjury.
Kane has been under investigation for allegedly leaking secret grand jury information to the media in order to embarrass a political foe and then later allegedly lying about it.
The new charges today directly relate to a search warrant executed last month at Kane's office.
Detectives allegedly recovered a copy of what's called a secrecy oath that Kane signed stating she would not make confidential information related to the secret grand jury public.
Kane and her attorney previously claimed she did not sign the oath and therefore did not break any law.
Kane's bail has been set at $10,000 unsecured.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for later this month.
