New Machines Create Custom 3D Designs In Coffee Foam

By Kim Glovas

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The latest craze in coffee is designs in the frothy foam on top. It's usually done by humans, but some specially designed machines are now created to make custom 3D designs.

The latest machine basically combines a 3D printer with an ink jet printer that uses coffee extract, to make custom designs. And it's expected to be marketed in September. Pannan is a barista at the Gryphon Cafe in Wayne. She says that's all well and good, but:

"I enjoy being able to make the art. I can do the hearts, and I can do sort of the long stem flowers, they sort of look like ferns, almost."

What about coffee drinkers? Margie was at Holy Grounds on the Villanova campus, and says designs in coffee foam are kind of foreign to her.

"I feel like I just drink regular coffee and just put skim milk in it, so It just never occurred to me to do it."

Erica was asked if she would ever want a design on her coffee.

"No, because I want to drink my coffee not look at it."
