3 On Your Side: $99 Wedding Dress Sale This Saturday
By Jim Donovan
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- This time next week love will be in the air as many celebrate Valentine's Day, including brides-to-be.
No matter what shape the economy is in, the cost of getting married doesn't come cheap. But 3 On Your Side Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan has found a way to save.
The average cost of a wedding dress these days is in the neighborhood of around $1,250 dollars. But there is one sale that will still allow you to toss out your bouquet, but not your budget.
Normally, designer bridal gowns cost a pretty penny, but not Saturday. Juli Lundberg, of Goodwill of Southern New Jersey, says, "New gowns start out at $99 and they cap out at $300. That's because the Goodwill at 5461 Route 70 in Pennsauken, New Jersey will be hosting its 6th annual bridal gown sale."
According to Lundberg, "We've spent all year getting ready for it, soliciting from area bridal stores, and they've been very generous to us."
Over 200 brand new wedding gowns will be on sale for a fraction of their original price.
"It's a true bargain. I mean, we have full price tags here up to $3,000 to $4,000. These gowns are generally sample gowns, overstock, past season, or they're just trying to clear away for spring arrivals," Lundberg explains.
And there are designer gowns available in sizes 1 through 50-plus, according to Lundberg,
"If a bride wants to go green and buy a gently used gown, we have a lot of them as well, and they start at $49," she says.
Bridesmaid and flower girl dresses will be up for sale, plus shoes and vintage accessories perfectly priced so as not to break the bank.
Goodwill's wedding gown sale runs all day tomorrow, February 8th, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., but in the past, the line has started forming at 6 a.m., so the earlier you get there, the better the selection.
Money raised goes back into Goodwill's job training program.
But do note: Goodwill only has a handful of dressing rooms. So you may want to wear a body suit, swim suit or something that will cover you up appropriately so that can you try on the gowns out right in the open.
