2 People, Dog Rescued After Falling Through Ice Into Delaware Pond, Police Say

NEW CASTLE COUNTY, Del. (CBS) -- First responders in New Castle County have a message to people who may think it's a good idea to walk across icy ponds: Don't do it. Crews rushed to Carousel park on Limestone Road Sunday for the water rescue, their third this month alone.

During the morning rescue, authorities say two people and their dog fell into the pond at Carousel Park. Everyone was rescued, but the two people showed signs of hypothermia.

Diesel the dog was all smiles when first responders took him to the vet.

But authorities say Diesel could have froze after he was chasing a goose around 11:30 a.m. Diesel ran across the ice-covered Pike Creek Pond and fell through.

The Mill Creek Fire Company was called to help with the rescue.

"It's very difficult to get a heavy dog out of the water because the dogs usually can't rescue themselves," firefighter Andrew Lloyd said.

Before rescuers arrived, two people who were with Diesel, tried to get him out of the cold water, but they also fell into the icy pond.

"It's definitely very frigid in that water," fire lieutenant Joe Groff said. "It seemed like the two people that ended up out there were in there for a substantial amount of time showing hypothermia."

Fortunately, some people who saw what happened quickly grabbed a rescue ring and helped get everyone out.

A man walking his dog Sunday says the rescue is a good reminder to leash your pets anytime you're near icy water.

"Dogs go swimming in there all the time, chasing sticks and stuff. But ice is a different thing," Jeff Rivenvark said.

Both people were taken to an area hospital and are doing OK.

Diesel was taken to a nearby vet and the big guy is also doing fine.
