2 Lost Hikers Found Alive In Snowy Summit In NY

KEENE, N.Y. (AP) — New York officials say two young hikers have been hospitalized with hypothermia after they spent two days near the snowy summit of the state's second-highest mountain.

The Department of Environmental Conservation says Tuesday afternoon that rangers and state police in a helicopter found 19-year-old Madison Popolizio and 20-year-old Blake Alois, both of Niskayuna in Schenectady County, on 5,115-foot Algonquin Peak in the Adirondacks.

DEC says rangers evacuated the hikers from 265 feet below the mountain's bald summit using a helicopter and flew them to a Saranac Lake hospital for treatment of hypothermia.

Officials say a DEC dispatcher received a call around 5:40 p.m. Sunday from family members reporting they hadn't heard from the hikers since about noon.

Rangers and state troopers searched amid deep snow and sub-freezing temperatures.
