Yanks Win On Toronto Error

Most times, the Toronto Blue Jays can count on Randy Myers and Tony Fernandez. Monday night, however, was not one of those times.

Fernandez made a two-out error in the 11th inning that scored the go-ahead run and the New York Yankees, taking advantage of Myers' first blown save in nearly a year, beat Toronto 3-2.

The Yankees rallied for two runs in the ninth against Myers, who had converted 37 straight save chances since last blowing one on May 3. New York won for the ninth time in 10 games and stopped the Blue Jays' three-game winning streak.

In the 11th, Chuck Knoblauch tripled with two outs and Derek Jeter followed with a routine grounder to second base. But the ball rolled off the glove of Fernandez, who had no play at first.

"We stole it. Some games you win, we stole it," Jeter said.

"If Tony Fernandez got a thousand more of those balls, he probably wouldn't miss another. He's one of the greatest infielders of all time, but everyone makes errors, everyone makes mistakes."

Last October, Fernandez's error on an easy grounder to second enabled the Florida Marlins to beat Cleveland in Game 7 of the World Series also by a 3-2 score and also in 11 innings.

"It happens to the best of them," Blue Jays manager Tim Johnson said. "Mistakes are bound to happen, and they capitalized on them."

Willie Banks (1-0) was the winner and Mike Stanton got his fourth save. Bill Risley (0-2) was the loser.

Myers, who led the majors in saves last season while converting 45 of 46 chances for Baltimore, took over to start the ninth with a 2-0 lead. But the Yankees, blanked on four hits by Woody Williams and Dan Plesac to that point, quickly rallied.

Chad Curtis led off with an infield single and Jorge Posada followed with an RBI double. Scott Brosius singled, and Knoblauch's forceout drove in a run and tied it at 2.

Rod Beck holds the record with 41 consecutive saves. Myers had not allowed a run in four appearances spanning 4 2-3 innings this season.

"I had three in a row this year," Myers said. "Last year is last year and doesn't help us this year."

"I'm thinking about trying to get guys out," he said. "If you're thinking about any kind of stats, you're going to be a failure. I just try to get guys out one at a time."

The Yankees and Blue Jays each wasted late chances to score the go-ahead run.

Toronto left the bases loaded in the ninth and 10th innings, with relievers Jeff Nelson and Banks escaping each jam. New York put a runner on third with one out in the ninth against Myers and left him there.

Alex Gonzalez, who singled home the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the 12th against Chicago on Sunday, hit a two-run double in the sixth off David Wels.

Kevin Brown led off with a double, Shannon Stewart followed with a single and Gonzalez doubled to the gap in left-center to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead.

The Yankees loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh against Williams. Plesac relieved and retired Paul O'Neill on a grounder to preserve Toronto's 2-0 lead.

Notes: Yankees DH Chili Davis underwent successful reconstructive surgery on ligaments and a tendon in his right ankle at a hospital in New York. Davis, 38, played in two games before going on the disabled list. He is expected to be out until late June. ... Jeter is 6-for-6 on steal tries. ... Williams has struck out 22 in 25 1-3 innings.
