Yankees Boss Collapses In Florida

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner collapsed at a memorial service for football great Otto Graham on Saturday and was hospitalized.

The 73-year-old Steinbrenner was taken by ambulance to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Paul Dezzi of the Sarasota County Fire Department said.

"He fainted. When we arrived, he was alert and oriented," Dezzi told The Associated Press. "He was very talkative in the ambulance. Right, now he's doing fine. There's nothing obvious from our side."

Steinbrenner was given oxygen, an electrocardiogram and intravenous fluids in the ambulance, Dezzi said.

Based on the preliminary tests, "Everything showed up fine," Dezzi said.

Hospital spokeswoman Lynn Cassan did not comment to the AP, citing patient confidentiality.

Yankees spokesman Rick Cerrone said he had no information on Steinbrenner. Team president Randy Levine had no immediate comment, and Steinbrenner publicist Howard Rubenstein did not immediately return telephone calls.

The collapse was first reported on the Web site of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

Steinbrenner was attending the service for Graham, the former Cleveland Browns quarterback who died Dec. 17 at 82.

Steinbrenner, who has owned the Yankees since 1973, grew up in Cleveland and lives in Tampa, Fla.
