Wyclef Jean: 'The Preacher's Son'

Performer Wyclef Jean started his musical career collaborating in the Fugees. After the group's breakup, he successfully went solo.

Now, he released a new album with help from a wide range of friends and musical companions.

The Haitian-born Jean stops by The Saturday Early Show's Second Cup Café to perform songs from his new CD "The Preacher's Son."

The Fugees, a New Jersey group, consisted of Lauryn Hill, Prakazrel "Pras" Michel and Jean, and was one of the most successful groups of the late 1990s. Their 1996 album, "The Score," became a multi-platinum success with hit singles such as the hip-hop interpretations of Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly With His Song" and Marley's "No Woman No Cry."

After breaking up with The Fugees, Jean created his 1997 solo album, "Carnival," which incorporated music from different cultures. In it, he collaborated with the Neville Brothers, salsa icon Celia Cruz and the New York Philharmonic. Jean's musical stamp also was heard on hit singles for artists such as Whitney Houston ("My Love Is Your Love"), Destiny's Child ("No, No, No") and Carlos Santana ("Maria, Maria").

But Jean's 2000 album, "The Ecleftic" and the 2002 "Masquerade," were less successful. This time, Jean says, his new album, "The Preacher's Son," will focus more on the songs and less on experimentation. Guest artists on the CD include Missy Elliott, Monica, Patti LaBelle, Carlos Santana and U2's the Edge.
