NEW YORK (CBS/AP) Wyclef Jean has checked into a hospital in an undisclosed location.

His rep, Marian Salzman, says the 37-year-old Grammy winner is "suffering from stress and fatigue based on the grueling eight week's he's had."

Back in August, Jean announced a bid for Haiti's presidency but ended it last week. No official reasons were given for Jean's exclusion although he's presumed not to have met consitiuational requirements, including living in Haiti. He currently resides in New Jersey.

His bid attracted scrutiny and criticism, including from actor Sean Penn, who questioned the Haitian-born singer's qualifications and expressed his suspicion of Jean and his political ambition while on "Larry King Live."

The ex-Fugee frontman defended himself and lashed out at Penn during a concert in New York in early September.

"I got a message for Sean Penn: Maybe he ain't see me in Haiti because he was too busy sniffing cocaine," Wyclef told the crowd at Hot 97's On Da Reggae Tip concert, according to MTV News.

When Jean officially withdrew his candidacy from the race, he said he plans to spend more time focusing on his music. His new album, "If I Were President, the Haitian Experience," is expected to drop next February.

Salzman confirms Jean is expected to be released from the hospital this week and "plans to take it easy."
