World Series Shares Down

Winning the World Series wasn't quite as rewarding for the New York Yankees this year as it was in 1998 at least when it came to cashing the check.

A full share for the Yankees was worth $307,809, down 1.4 percent from the record $312,042 a full share was worth last year, the commissioner's office said Thursday.

Just as in 1998, the Yankees voted 32 full shares, but players voted 16 partial shares, up from six last year.

Players gave team staff four full shares, 38 partial shares and two cash awards, while last year they gave the staff eight full shares, five partial shares and 22 cash awards.

The players' pool, which includes ticket money from the first three games of each division series, the first four games of each league championship series and the first four games of the World Series, totaled a record $40,798,858, up 3.8 percent from $39,296,632 last year.

Members of the NL champion Atlanta Braves received $203,542 for a full share, down 0.3 percent from the $204,184 for a full share on the 1998 San Diego Padres, also swept by the Yankees.

For the teams that lost the league championship series, a full share on the New York Mets was worth $109,879 and a full share on the Boston Red Sox was worth $100,573.

Among the first-round losers, a full share was worth $28,106 on Texas, $26,499 on Houston, $25,019 on Cleveland, and $24,990 on Arizona.

Among the second-place teams that didn't make the playoffs, shares were worth $9,717 on the Oakland Athletics, $9,490 on the Chicago White Sox, $9,405 on the San Francisco Giants, and $8,383 on the Cincinnati Reds.
