Why This Old Mexican Trumpet Player Could Be Coca-Cola's Best New Idea
If the marketing executives at Coca-Cola (KO) have any sense at all they will immediately get on a plane and scour Mexico to find this street musician, who performs with a mariachi street band using an empty plastic Coke bottle as a fully functioning trumpet. This grainy video has already had half a million views since Aug. 22, putting it on the edge of viral phenomenon territory:
It's not fake. Here he is again, playing on a bus. And again in a park. Who is this man? It's up to Coke to find out, sign him up, and make him the star of an awesome ad campaign. The effort would be a triple-threat: It's already proven it's got viral chops without any promotion whatsoever; it's a nice new idea for an old product; and kids everywhere will beg their parents to bring back the plastic bottles from the supermarket so they can try it at home.
The sound on these videos isn't great, so here's a different trumpeter showing off the instrument's range:
I'm not the only person who thinks this is a slam dunk for Coke. Break.com thinks it's awesome, as did G4TV. Daily Picks and Flicks liked it. Irish magazine Joe has already drafted a script for the commercial.
