Why Apple Should be Worried About Sharp's 3D Android Phones
Sharp (SRP) is bringing two different glassesless 3D Android phones to market this winter. That will add even more pressure on Apple (APPL) to determine its portable 3D strategy. Whether it is a 3D addition to the iPod or an optional add-on, Apple will have to make a move in 2011.
The two Android phones, Galapagos 003SH and 005SH, will be out in Japan by year's end, and Sharp says at least one will be available in the U.S., China, and India in 2011. Both use the latest Android 2.2 software and sport an 8 MegaPixel camera.
There are three reasons why Apple needs to react:
- Major game companies are aligning with Sharp: Sharp reportedly has the support of several major game companies that are creating titles specifically for the devices. If it sounds familiar, it's because Apple competitor, Nintendo (NTYDO), is aligning with major game companies for its highly-anticipated mobile, the Nintendo 3DS. When it comes to Nintendo, Apple has the competitive advantage because the iPhone/iPod offers multifunctionality with apps and a phone. But Sharp's Android devices have the potential to be just as versatile and carry gaming support comparable to Nintendo.
- 3D cameras are becoming the default: As I've noted in the past, 3D is the one defense stand-alone cameras (a la Flip) have against cannibalization. The new Sharp phones squash that idea: They have an 8 MP camera, and while it's unclear if the photos/videos will be 3D, they obviously have the opportunity there. However, like the stand-alone camera market, Apple also doesn't have a good response to 3D competitors right now. If Apple doesn't start planning now to add 3D to its next generation of iPhone/iPod, the company will be defenseless until 2012.
- The 3D movie market is exploding: While it's a small category now, it won't be for long. In fact, the number of 2011 3D movies announced already equals those already released or confirmed for this year. Considering the Apple Store numbers are slumping, Apple shouldn't give consumers another excuse to buy an Android phone or a Nintendo 3DS . Portable 3D movies could be a very persuasive inducement, too.
