"Where's The Beef?"
Portfolio's Matt Cooper makes an insightful observation about the basic dynamic between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, especially the lack of scrutiny Obama has received on specifics during the past year. Cooper likens it to the contest between Gary Hart and Walter Mondale in 1988, and posits that Clinton needs a "where's the beef" moment.
After a defeat to Hart in New Hampshire, Mondale referenced the popular (at the time) Wendy's catch-phrase to great effect in a debate, calling Hart on the floor for a lack of policy specifics. Mondale, of course, went on to win the nomination and Wendy's gained a spot in campaign history. Something to keep an eye out for in tonight's debate although the campaign has thus far sounded more like an Apple ad with Obama playing the part of a Mac and Clinton as the PC.
