Week in Twitter: #Weinergate, Lady Gaga, and tough times for Jim Tressel

Weiner: Lewd Twitter picture "a bit of mischief"
Alex Wong

(CBS/What's Trending) - Let's face it: this week on Twitter was all about Weiner. [Insert crotch joke]. Hashtagged #Weinergate, this week's big story was a picture posted to Twitter from New York Congressman Anthony Weiner. The photo in question, of a man's clothed crotch, was tweeted at a 21-year-old college student in Seattle. Weiner claims his account was hacked and "can't say with certitude" whether the offending lower regions actually belong to him. This seems...odd. However, he enjoys being vague and has hired a law firm to investigate what's going on -- not law enforcement, but a law firm.

People speculated whether this will hurt Weiner's potential bid for NYC mayor. Keep in mind that Rudy Guiliani did okay, and he has been known to dress up as a woman. And, according to the Daily Beast, the mysterious manpic isn't hurting Weiner's electoral chances. I guess we'll have to wait and see!

Another guy having a bad week? Former OSU football coach Jim Tressel. The Buckeye's coach stepped down Monday after 10 seasons with the team, following revelations that he had knowledge of his players selling Ohio State memorabilia but didn't alert athletic department officials. The worst news of all is that Cleveland's Hyde Park Prime Steakhouse is no longer selling their steak named after Tressel. The coach's resignation and the fact that players sold their OSU gear in order to get tattoos sparked debate about the entire college football system. Some bloggers proposed paying collegiate athletes, while others think that would sully NCAA athletics. One thing we can all agree on: it sucks to be the OSU fan that named his son Tressel.

IPO mania continued with deal-of-the-day website Groupon filing Thursday. People love using Groupon, but will its stock sell? Mad Money's Jim Cramer says it'll be a good deal to be in on, but not necessarily one to stick with. Only will time will tell. Fun fact: @stocktwits can predict the future! Kind of. Turns out they created a $grpn ticker several months ago, and then Groupon actually used it. If you don't buy the stock, at least you can always get $20 worth of gourmet sea-salt pretzels for $10.

The world went crazy for Gaga, as Mother Monster's 'Born This Way' album sold over two million albums its first week. Lots of these sales came from an Amazon deal to sell the record for just 99 cents on its debut day, losing the site $3 million. But since Lady Gaga approved of the move, all is right in the world. Carry on, monsters.

And finally, one more dude had a pretty bad week. Former US Senator/presidential candidate John Edwards was indicted Friday on conspiracy and campaign-law violations. Talking Points Memo traced the whole mess back to Edwards' $400 haircut back when he was just a guy who liked to look nice (and father illegitimate children). Some juicy details emerged from the indictment, including that some money to help fund Edwards' affair with Rielle Hunter was delivered with a note reading "Old Chinese saying: use cash, not credit card." Words to live by.
