David Cameron was rushed by a member of the public on the street before his bodyguards intervened and hurried the British prime minister into his car, video footage showed.

The suspect was arrested but quickly released, with police saying there was "nothing sinister" about the incident.

The footage shows a man with long hair and apparently holding something in his hand race up to Cameron as he was leaving an event in Leeds, England. The man appears to make contact with Cameron before security personnel pulled the man away and ushered Cameron into a waiting car.

"A 28-year-old local man was briefly arrested after he came close to the prime minister's group," West Yorkshire Police said in a statement released on Twitter.

"No threats were made, and after the man's details were checked, he was de-arrested and allowed on his way."

The force tweeted that the man was just "in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Britain recently raised the country's terror threat level from substantial to severe, citing developments in Iraq and Syria.
