STAFFORD, Va. -- Authorities say a man shot a sheriff's deputy who was responding to a break-in call at a Virginia home.

Stafford County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman M.C. Morris Moncure said by telephone Wednesday that residents of the Stafford home reported Tuesday night that a man they knew was breaking in. She says as the deputy responded, a man fired multiple shots, striking the deputy four times, but he was protected by body armor.

Morris Moncure says the deputy's injuries are serious, but not life-threatening. She says it's not clear whether the deputy fired any shots.

The sheriff's office announced in a statement early Wednesday that authorities arrested a suspect, 18-year-old Joshua Anthony Sumter, who was sought on warrants for attempted capital murder. Morris Moncure says he was arrested without incident or injury.
