Viagra For Panda-monium?

A low sex drive is one of the factors that contributes to the dwindling panda population in Beijing, reports Monday CBS News Correspondent Barry Petersen.

Them animals are irritable, difficult to get interested in sex, and not interested in female pandas. Normally, this would be nobody's business except the panda's. But, with the world population of these giant creatures down to a mere 1,000, it's time to do something.

Freezing male sperm and using artificial insemination to get the female pregnant is China's plan A. It is being tested in a high-tech way to getting around the panda's low sex drive.

There's also plan B, giving the males the anti-impotence drug, Viagra. And frankly, this may be more to the male panda's liking.

Scientists have already tried traditional Chinese medicines and aphrodisiacs, but it made the males hot tempered and they attacked the females.

Researchers hope Viagra will turn the males from reluctant to romantic.

If it works, the scientists will be happy. Panda fans will be happy. And the females, one thinks, might offer a panda smile or two as well.
