USGS Reports Magnitude-6.9 Earthquake in Mexico

A powerful earthquake struck beneath Mexico's Gulf of California on Thursday, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude of the quake that hit at 11:53 a.m. (1:53 p.m. EDT) was calculated as 6.9.

The epicenter was about 65 miles south of Los Mochis and 85 miles northeast of La Paz in Baja California. It was at a relatively shallow depth of 6.2 miles.

The same region was hit by three moderately powerful earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 5.5 to 5.8 Tuesday night and early Wednesday, but they caused no known damage.
